Dynamics 365 Business Central and Shopify connection: access key rotation.

If you’re currently using Dynamics 365 Business Central connected with Shopify, there’s an important announcement that you should be aware of and that I want to emphasize.

As part of periodic security updates, Microsoft will rotate Shopify app’s (Dynamics 365 Business Central) secret. This means that existing connections with access keys associated with the old secret will stop working. You might see “[API] Invalid API key or access token (unrecognized login or wrong password)” error messages for your job queues:

The rotation will take place on April 11th at around 10:00 CET.

One easy way to check if your connection is affected after the rotation is to go to Shopify Shop Card and use the Test Connection action:

Affected connections will see the following error:

[API] Invalid API key or access token (unrecognized login or wrong password)

If your connection is affected, make sure to go to Shopify Shop Card and use the Request Access action as described in Troubleshooting the Shopify and Business Central synchronization – Business Central | Microsoft Learn:

Request the access token

If Business Central won’t connect to your Shopify account, try to request the access token from Shopify. You might need to request a new token if there were changes to the security keys or required permissions (application scopes). To do that:

  1. Select the shop for which you want to get the access token to open the Shopify Shop Card page.
  2. Choose the Request Access action.
  3. If prompted, sign in to your Shopify account.
  4. The Has AccessKey toggle is turned on.

Important notes:

  • The browser might block the pop-up window. When you start the Request Access action, Business Central opens the Waiting for a response – do not close this page page while it waits for an access token from Shopify. If that page is closed or blocked, you can’t connect to Shopify.
  • It might be a good idea to have the Shopify admin open in the same browser as Business Central.

Please check your Shopify connections tomorrow and act accordingly.
