Keep alive VB6 or not?

There’s on the air a petition launched by some MVPs around the world and its summary is this: we want to resume VB6!

Really? Why this revolution of nostalgic people? I can’t understand the reasons… I think that exactly as the hardware is on a continuos revolution of features and performances, the same must be for the software.

VB6 is a great language, no doubt about this. I think VB6 has the honour to be the first language that has transformed and make easy the way of programming Windows. With its adoption, the Win32 programming world was accessible for a big range of developers, from the beginner to the advanced programmer.

I know that lots of big projects was built around VB6 (I see this a lot of time during my work) and works good for the customer, but if you plan to start a new project now there’s no doubt: the road is not VB6. I know also that lots of people are not sure to start a migration, they think it could be a danger for their work and their business. But, are you totally sure about this?

A platform migration is always a big step, maybe a big investment for the customer, but the advantages of a new technology and a new application design will be sure.

We’re now on the year 2005, we’re talking about Longhorn, Indigo, SQL Server 2005, 64 bit processors, dual core cpu and… we want VB6??? Absurd…

The IT world is based on a word: EVOLUTION. If you are a VB6 nostalgic, a good VB6 programmer, I think that for you will not be so difficult to pass to something like VB.NET. Your way of programming and your applications will be better (and I think your life too…  ). VB6 was good but its time has passed… managed code is the future!

Update: the new email rule from Microsoft regarding VB6: :) :)
